Ingredients

  • Old-fashioned oats: the base of this recipe and a good source of carbs and fiber for energy
  • Vanilla extract: adds some flavored depth and pears perfectly with the chocolate chips and cherries
  • Chocolate chips: love the crunch of chocolate chips and opted to do this for chocolatey goodness and every bite instead of cocoa powder
  • Frozen cherries: adds sweetness and are available all year long in the frozen aisle
  • Milk (dairy or non-dairy): adds creaminess and help soak up the oats for the right consistency
  • Maple syrup: contributes a little more sweetness that I think is necessary to balance out any bitter notes from the other ingredients
  • Plain Greek yogurt: offer some protein and additional creaminess to the consistency of these overnight oats

Note: I got a request to make overnight oat recipes without chia seeds. So if you’re not a big chia seed fan, this one is for you!

Directions

  1. In a mason jar or bowl, combine the oats, vanilla extract, chocolate chips, cherries, and milk.
  2. Stir in the maple syrup and Greek yogurt until well-mixed.
  3. Seal the jar or cover the bowl, then refrigerate overnight or for at least 4 hours.
  4. In the morning, give the oats a stir, and add any extra toppings like more chocolate chips or fresh cherries.
  5. Enjoy chilled or warmed up!

Storage Instructions

  • Refrigerate: Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. I find that after three days these start to get a little soggy for my personal preferences.
  • Freezing: These overnight oats can be frozen, but the texture may change slightly. Thaw in the fridge before serving.

Substitutions & Variations

  • Dairy-Free: Swap Greek yogurt and milk for plant-based alternatives like almond or coconut yogurt and milk.
  • Lightened Up: Skip the chocolate chips or use dark chocolate for a healthier version.
  • Extra Protein: Add a scoop of protein powder to the mix for an additional protein boost.
