Ozempic Fatigue: What Causes It and How to Have More Energy

As a diabetes educator, I have recently seen quite a few people who are on Ozempic and complain of fatigue and tiredness. Often, I find that these people have lost a lot of weight in a short amount of time and are trying to adjust quickly to being on this medication.

There are real reasons why you may be feeling fatigued, and easy solutions to start feeling better. These are the exact strategies I used with my clients, and they work. Let’s dive in!

Let’s Review: What is Ozempic and How Does It Work?

Ozempic is a medication designed to help manage type 2 diabetes and promote weight loss by mimicking a hormone called GLP-1. It helps regulate blood sugar levels, slows down digestion, and reduces appetite.

While these functions are beneficial, they can also lead to fatigue, especially as your body adjusts to the medication.

Why Does Ozempic Cause Fatigue and Tiredness?

Several factors can contribute to fatigue while on Ozempic. The medication’s effect on appetite and digestion can lead to significant changes in your diet and metabolism, which may leave you feeling low in energy.

If you’ve recently started Ozempic or increased your dose, it’s common to experience tiredness as your body adapts. However, if it persists, there are a few things we want to do to start increasing your energy levels.

4 Reasons You Have Ozempic Fatigue

1. You’re not eating enough

Ozempic helps suppress your appetite, which can be helpful for weight loss, but it may also lead to severely under-eating. When you’re not eating enough, your body has fewer calories to convert into energy, leaving you feeling sluggish. If it goes on too long, it can result in serious fatigue.

Make sure you’re still consuming balanced, nutrient-dense meals even if you don’t feel as hungry. I generally recommend the “4 hour” rule. If you haven’t eaten in 4 hours, you need a snack or a balanced meal.

Pro tip: You might also consider a multivitamin to “fill in” the gaps in your diet and ensure that you get adequate nutrients like B vitamins, especially B12, and minerals like iron.

2. You’re dehydrated

Ozempic can sometimes cause side effects like nausea or diarrhea, which may contribute to dehydration. Dehydration can lead to fatigue, as your body relies on adequate fluid levels to function properly.

To stay hydrated, aim for at least 8 glasses of water daily, and more if you’re losing fluids due to side effects like vomiting or diarrhea. If these side effects persist, and you can’t rehydrate properly, contact your doctor.

3. You’re not eating enough protein

Protein plays a crucial role in maintaining muscle mass and energy levels, especially when you’re losing weight. If your diet lacks protein, it could be another reason why you feel tired.

For a protein boost, try incorporating lean protein sources like chicken, fish, eggs, yogurt, or plant-based options like beans and tofu into your meals. Don’t be afraid to supplement with protein shakes if you need to increase your protein in a convenient way.

4. You’re losing weight too rapidly

Weight loss, especially when it happens quickly, can leave you feeling drained. While Ozempic promotes weight loss by reducing hunger and slowing digestion, rapid weight loss may result in fatigue as your body adjusts to the changes.

To maintain steady energy levels, focus on gradual, sustainable weight loss rather than rapid results. Ensure you’re eating enough calories to support your energy needs.

Other Common Side Effects of Ozempic

Alongside fatigue, Ozempic can cause other side effects, including:

  • Weight loss, of course
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Abdominal pain
  • Decreased appetite
  • Less “food noise”
  • General bloating
  • Increased feelings of fullness
